The Cycas (Cycas Tree Benefits) is a very ancient genus of trees. The group achieved its maximum diversity in the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, when it was distributed almost worldwide. It is a very slow-growing, symmetrical plant that produces a crown of shiny, arching, palm-like, evergreen palmate leaves atop a shaggy upright trunk. Trunks take a long time to form (1″ diameter trunks may take years to eventually reach 12″ diameter). Young plants typically grow to 2-3′ tall over several years, but may take 50 or more years to eventually reach 10′ tall. Arching pinnate leaves (to 3-7′ long depending on age) form a loose, feather-like rosette with leaflets to 7″ long. Each leaf has a large mid-rib with very narrow, rigid, spiny-tipped, deep green leaflets.

Leaflets have revolute edges (margins rolled downward), hence the specific epithet. Young sago palm plants produce leaves intermittently in several different growth spurts per year, however mature plants only produce leaves once per year. Plants are dioeciously (separate male and female plants). Female plants will not produce seed without a nearby male; however these plants rarely flower when grown indoors in containers. Males produce upright yellowish ellipsoid pollen cones (to 12-18″ tall). Orbicular female cones produce vermilion seeds.

यह पौधा खजूर के समान दिखाई देता है, किन्तु इसकी ऊँचाई अधिक नहीं होती, यह धीरे-धीरे वृद्धि करता है, इसके तने की ऊँचाई अधिक होती है। इसका तना खजूर के समान ही होता है, इसके ऊपर पत्तियों के टूटने के निशान बने होते हैं। पत्तियां शीर्ष पर मुकुट बनाकर लगी होती हैं। प्रत्येक पत्ती में एक लम्बी डण्डी होती है, जिसके दोनों ओर पतली-पतली गहरी हरी नुकीले सिरों वाली पर्णिकायें लगी होती हैं। ये पर्णिकायें कुछ अधिक चौड़ी और लम्बी होती हैं, साथ ही जिस डण्डी पर ये पर्णिकायें लगती हैं, वह डंडियां काफी लम्बी होती हैं। इस पौधे की जड़े जमीन में गहरी होती हैं, यह पौधा काफी मजबूत होता है। पौधों के सिरों पर विशेष प्रकार की रचनायें विकसित होती हैं जिन्हें कोण (Cones) कहते हैं।
