The general meaning of ‘Vrihat Tantrasaar’ is the detailed essence of the tantras. The literal meaning of ‘Aagamvaageesh’, used as the pen name of the author, is ‘Master of the scriptures’.
According to ‘Rudrayamal’, the word ‘Aagam’ refers to what comes out of Bhagwan Shiva’s mouth and goes into Mata Parvati’s mouth, meaning, by combining the first letters of ‘Aagam,’ ‘Gautam,’ and ‘Matam’, we get the word ‘Aagam’. In summary, Shree Krishnaanand Bhattacharya is the knower of all scriptures. Which has a compilation of the essence of the tantras and presented it in a tangible form. Naming the text ‘Brihat Tantrasaar’. Firstly, two words here are worth considering: ‘Tanv’ and ‘Aagam’.
In Sanskrit literature, the word ‘Tantra’ has many meanings. But here it is ‘that which expands knowledge. The word ‘Tantra’ is the combination of the root Tanu vistaryante Gyanam iti tantram. The word ‘Tantra’ is from the root ‘Tanu vistaryante’, with the suffix ‘hun’ attached. The root ‘Tanu’ means ‘to expand’, and ‘va’ means to protect. The essence is that ‘Tantra’ expands the knowledge that is protective of humans.

श्रीकृष्णानन्द भट्टाचार्य ‘आगमवागीश’ द्वारा प्रणीत तन्वशास्त्र का मोहनीय ग्रन्थ वृहत् तंत्रसार तंत्रवाड्मय का सर्वमान्य प्रामाणिक ग्रन्थ है৷ ‘वृहत् तन्त्र-सार’ का सामान्य अर्थ ‘तन्त्रों का विस्तृत सार’ होता है৷ ग्रन्थकर्ता के उपाधिरूप से प्रयुक्त ‘आगमवागीश’ का शाब्दिक अर्थ ‘आगमों का स्वामी’ है৷ ‘रुद्रयामल’ के अनुसार, जो विष्णुमत भगवान शिव के मुंह से निकलता है और माता पार्वती के मुंह में जाता है, उसे आगम कहा जाता है৷ अर्थात, इन तीन शब्दों आगम, गतम और मतम के पहले अक्षरों को मिलाकर शब्द ‘आगम’ बनता है৷
सारांश यह है कि सभी आगमों के ज्ञाता श्रीकृष्णानन्द भट्टाचार्य ने तन्त्रों के सार का विस्तृत संकलन कर उसे मूर्त स्वरूप प्रदान करते हुये ग्रन्थ का नाम ‘बृहत् तंत्रसार’ रखा है৷ सर्वप्रथम यहाँ दो शब्द विचारणीय है- ‘तन्व’ और ‘आगम’৷ संस्कृत साहित्य में ‘तंत्र’ शब्द के अनेक अर्थ होते हैं; किन्तु यहाँ पर ‘तन्यते विस्तार्यंते ज्ञानं इति तन्त्रम्’ यहां अर्थ मान्य है৷ ‘तन्त्र’ शब्द ‘तनु विस्तारे’ धातु से ‘हुन्’ प्रत्यय का योग होकर निष्पन्न होता है৷ ‘तन्’ धातु का अर्थ ‘विस्तार करना’ एवं ‘व’ का अर्थ ‘रक्षा करना’ होता है৷ आशय यह है कि ‘तन्त्र’ उस ज्ञान का विस्तार करता है, जो मनुष्यों का रक्षाकारक है৷
