ज्योतिष शास्त्र वेद का नेत्र कहलाता है। यह शास्त्र आश्चर्यजनक है। जो बालक आज पैदा हुआ है, इस शास्त्र के द्वारा उसका समस्त जीवन बताया जा सकता है। इसी प्रकार राष्ट्रीय और अन्तराष्ट्रीय घटनाओं की भविष्यवाणी की जाती है। इस शास्त्र के विद्वानों द्वारा की जाने वाली भविष्यवाणीयां अधिकतर सत्य ही होती हैं। यदि कुछ कमी रह जाती है, तो इसका कारण भी गत हजार वर्ष के काल में असभ्य बर्बर इस्लामी आक्रमणकारियों द्वारा हमारे ऋषि-मुनियों द्वारा निरन्तर इस शास्त्र की गहराइयों को समझा और परखा जा रहा है। यह छोटा-सा जातक ग्रन्थ इसी उद्देश्य से लिखा गया है।
