Baba Farid, or Baba Sheikh Farid, or Khwaja Fariduddin Mas’ud Ganjshakar was a Sufi preacher and one of the most significant saints in Punjab during the 12th century. Baba Farid was born in the month of Ramzan in 1173 CE at Kothewal village, Punjab (now in Pakistan). Hazrat Baba Fariduddin reach the pinnacle of spiritual glory through extremely hard “Mujahedas” and persistent “Riyazaat” in order to gain complete mastery over the Nafs (appetitive soul).- Baba Farid Pushtak

It is reported that Baba Farid, under his Pir-o-Murshid’s command, performed many awe-inspiring ‘Mujahedas’ (strivings) which drained his vitality although he persevered through spiritual nourishment and determination. Hazrat Baba Fariduddin fasted daily throughout his life and yet he regularly maintained his nightly program of prayers and devotion. So great was his spiritual vitality that he never gave up fasting even when he was sick. During the nights of Ramadan, he used to finish two readings of the Holy Quran. Fear of God always dominated him and very often he use to weep penitently, sometimes loudly, out of God’s fear.-Baba Farid Pushtak.

Hazrat Baba Fariduddin Ganjshakar was one of the biggest ‘Mujaheds’ of Sufism. He perform many mujahedas both before and after getting Khilafat. Genealogy of Baba Sheikh Farid ji is given in the Jawahir-e-Faridi (The gems of Farid), preserve at the shrine of Pak Pattan, by Ali Asghar of Bahadal, a town near Sirhind.
