तन्त्र विद्या का प्रचलन पुरातन काल से सम्पूर्ण विश्व में रहा है ৷ बौद्ध कालीन युग में तो भारत के अतिरिक्त सुदूर देशी चीन, तिब्बत सुमात्रा आदि में भी इसका व्यापक रूप से प्रचार-प्रसार देखने को मिलता है ৷ इसी विद्या के बल पर दैत्यगुरु शुक्राचार्य ने संजीवनी विद्या की प्राप्ति की थी ৷ मंत्र बल के द्वारा ही महर्षि विश्वामित्र ने एक नूतन स्वर्गलोक की रचना कर डाली थी ৷ इतना ही नहीं, बल्कि विषम परिस्थितियों से त्राण पाने के लिए देवगन भी तंत्र विद्द्या के आश्रयण किया करते थे।

इसके कुछ उदाहरण यहाँ उद्धृत कर देना असंगत नहीं होगा ৷ जिस समय अपने वनवास काल में भगवान श्रीराम चित्रकूट पर निवास कर रहे होते हैं उस समय भरत जी उन्हें अयोध्या वापस लाने के लिए पहुंचते हैं। परन्तु यह कार्य देवों को स्वीकार नहीं था। अतः देवताओं ने वहाँ उपस्थित सभी अयोध्यावासियों पर उच्चाटन प्रयोग कर दिया। जिसके फलस्वरूप सभी के मन में अस्थिरता उत्पन्न हो गयी। इसका वर्णन गोस्वामी तुलसीदास जी ने अपने कृति पर किया है ৷ युद्ध में जब रावण को अपन पराजय सुनिश्चित प्रतीत होने लगी तो वह अमरत्व प्राप्ति के लिए तांत्रिक साधना में निरत हो गया, जिसकी सूचना विभीषण ने श्रीराम को दी।
