The scriptures of dharma are the cause of worldly activities, whereas the scriptures of knowledge lead to renunciation. The path of Vedanta is the path of knowledge. Millions of actions cannot replace knowledge. Knowledge is not the result of actions; it is the result of thought.

Actions are subject to the doer, while knowledge is never subject to the doer; if it were, everyone would become knowledgeable. The knowledge of an object comes from observation, but the knowledge of Brahman is merely to know it, to experience it. Knowledge is the means to remove ignorance; actions are an obstacle to knowledge. Therefore, liberation is in the hands of God; it is not the result of human effort. The path of knowledge speaks of liberation, while the devotee speaks of the vision; both meanings are the same. The only difference is in language.

मुक्ति का साधन केवल ब्रह्मज्ञान है৷ यह ज्ञान है – जीव और ब्रह्म की एकता का ज्ञान৷ मोक्ष का अधिकारी सन्यासी है और गृहस्थ कर्म का अधिकारी है৷ धर्मशास्त्र प्रवृत्ति का हेतु है जबकि ज्ञानशास्त्र निवृत्ति का৷ वेदान्त का मार्ग ज्ञान का मार्ग है৷ करोड़ों कर्म भी ज्ञान का स्थान नहीं ले सकते৷ ज्ञान, कर्मों का फल नहीं है यह विचार का परिणाम है৷ कर्म कर्त्ता के अधीन होता है और ज्ञान कभी कर्त्ता के अधीन नहीं होता यदि वह भी कर्त्ता के अधीन होता तो सभी ज्ञानी बन जाते৷

किसी वस्तु का ज्ञान देखने से होता है किन्तु ब्रह्म का ज्ञान उसे जानना मात्र है, अनुभूति करना है৷ ज्ञान ही अज्ञान को दूर ‘करने का उपाय है, कर्म तो ज्ञान में बाधक है৷ अतः मुक्ति ईश्वर के हाथ में है; वह किसी पुरुषार्थ का परिणाम नहीं है৷ ज्ञानमार्गी मुक्ति की बात कहते हैं व भक्त उसे दर्शन की बात कहते हैं, दोनों का अर्थ एक ही है৷ केवल भाषा का ही अन्तर है৷
