Impressed by Mahishasura’s devotion, Lord Brahma decided to grant him a boon. Mahishasura so excited at such an opportunity requested Brahma to bless him so that neither man nor God could kill him. So his death would only lie at the hands of a woman – which in his mind was impossible. Mahishasura took the advantage and along with his troop of Asuras attacked the Earth. However, The battle between Asuras and Devas was fierce. Mashishasura eventually defeated Indra’s army at Amravati. Humiliated, the Devas met the Tridevas in the hope of finding a solution. Frustrated and angered by the defeat of the Devas, the Tridevas began to think. “Only a woman can kill Mahishasura,” said Lord Brahma, thinking of the boon he had given to the Asura. But woman in the three realms was strong enough to engage in battle. For instance, the Tridevs put their minds together and used their powers to create an energy that took the form of Devi Durga (Maa Durga Statue).
