Shiva Stuti/शिव स्तुति
Shiva Stuti (शिव स्तुति): Shiva meaning “The Auspicious One” is one of the three major deities of Hinduism. He is worshiped as the Supreme God within Shaivism, one of the three most influential denominations in contemporary Hinduism and is also called “the Creator, the Preserver, the Transformer and the Destroyer”. At the highest level, Shiva is regarded as formless, limitless, transcendent, and unchanging.
Shiva has many benevolent and fearsome depictions. Shiva is also regarded as the patron god of yoga, meditation, and arts. Shiva is known by several names – Mahadev, Pashupati, Bhairav, Vishwanath, Bhole Nath, Shambhu and Shankar. Shiva is the cosmic dancer and also known as Nataraja, the Lord of Dancers. Hindus recognize Lord Shiva by putting His shrine in the temple separate from those of other deities in the form of Shivling.
Stuti is a form of devotional worship, invocation, supplication, praise, adoration, meditation and direct, experiential communion. Unless we are actually in a state of Samadhi (total absorption), which is rare for most people, japa provides a means to disengage from our racing thoughts and our memories of the past, mostly the bad ones. Shiva Stuti later became well known as the Shiva Mahimna Stotra. Many scholars have expressed their adoration for Lord Shiva with poetic and devotional verses. But, among all the Stotra (hymns of praise), the one created and composed by Gandharva Pushhpadanta is believed to be one of the most popular.
Stuti of devotedly repeating a mantra for generally a specified number of times is called Stuti, such as 108. It includes counting on a strand of beads, called a Jaap mala while conscientiously concentrating on the meaning of the mantra. The repetition should be dutifully at such speed that the chanter should be able to absorb the meaning of mantra while chanting. This brings Virtue, merit, to the devotee. It should not be thoughtlessly mechanical or so-called rapid-fire or machine-gun Jaap, which demonstrate ignorance of the Tantra. Such casual, nonchalant negligence and disregard for contemplative traditions brings papa, demerit, to the devotee.
