Surya Stotra/सूर्य स्तोत्र
Surya Stotra (सूर्य स्तोत्र): Surya or Sun god is an important deity worshipped by the Hindus. In our culture it is often found that the forces of nature themselves as deities are worshipped like the wind, the water, the earth, the fire and so on. One among these deities is Surya, the presiding deity of our Sun, also known as Aditya (due to his being the son of Aditi), who is worshipped as the sustainers of life on earth.
As the sunrise dispels that darkness of the worlds, Surya also removes the darkness of ignorance and bestows wisdom. Sun is said to be the embodiment of all knowledge. In fact, he is the Guru of Lord Hanuman. Some of the impending benefits ensuing from the chanting of Surya Stotra include long life, cure of diseases, physical and mental well-being, cure of skin diseases and improvement in vision.
Sage Agastya reminded Sri Rama of the Sun God’s (also called Surya or Aditya) full glory and unlimited prowess through the Surya Stotra. He describes the entire cosmos and nature’s cycles in Surya Stotra and Lord Surya’s integral and vital role in sustaining inter-related components in this creation. In this Surya Stotra, a vivid picture of the earth, solar system, living creatures (both plants and animals), mountains, the forces of nature (namely fire, air, water, soil, and sky) are brought before Sri Rama’s vision. Sage Agastya asserts that Lord Surya’s grace was essential for achieving victory over enemies, removing sins, eliminating worries, energizing the body for restoring vitality and longevity.
