मनुष्य अपनी जिज्ञासु प्रवृत्ति के कारण सृष्टि की प्रत्येक वस्तु के साथ अपने जीवन का सम्बन्ध स्थापित करने को तत्पर रहता है। भारतीय शास्त्रानुसार मनुष्य निरंतर कर्मरत रहता है। यह कर्म तीन प्रकार का होता है – संचित, प्रारब्ध एवं क्रियमाण। मनुष्य द्वारा वर्तमान क्षण तक किये गये कर्म संचित कर्म कहलाते है, चाहे वे इस जन्म में या पूर्व जन्म में किये गये हो। संचित कर्म का जो भाग भुक्त अवस्था में रहता है प्रारब्ध और कर्म सिद्धान्त के कारण आत्मा अनेक शरीर धारण करती है। जब एक शरीर जीर्ण हो जाता है। तो मरणोपरान्त आत्मा दूसरे स्थूल शरीर में प्रवेश कर जाती है। -Jyotish Sikhen Book.
आदिकाल से ही मानव अप्राप्य के प्रति जिज्ञासु रहा है इसलिए उसकी सर्वोत्कृष्ट इच्छा अपना भविष्य जानने की होती है। इस इच्छा की पूर्ति के लिए मानव ने अथक प्रयासों के फलस्वरूप ऋषियों की अमूल्य और अखण्ड सम्पत्ति को खोज निकाला जो शनै: शनै: जगत प्रसिद्ध हो गई। इस अखण्ड सम्पत्ति में उनके द्वारा रचित सूत्र अकाट्य सत्य है जिनकी प्रमाणिकता ज्योतिष शास्त्र में प्रत्यक्ष है। ज्योतिष शब्द से इसका तात्पर्य स्पष्ट आभासित होता है, ‘ज्योति’ अर्थात प्रकाश जिससे जीवन की महत्वता झलकती है, आँखें प्रकाश में ही देखने योग्य होती है अन्यथा अँधेरा ही व्याप्त है। अत: स्पष्ट है कि ज्योतिष शास्त्र वह शास्त्र है जिसमें शरीर स्थित सौर मंडल का बाह्य मंडल से पारस्परिक सम्बन्ध विश्लेषित करके ग्रहों की स्थिति एवं गति के अनुसार फलाफल निर्देशित करना है। जैसा कि इस संस्कृत उक्ति से स्पष्ट होता है – ‘ज्योतिष सूर्यादि ग्रहाणां बोधकं शास्त्रम। -Jyotish Sikhen Book.
